Tips for Success

Online math courses allow for flexible learning and are designed to be delivered asynchronously to accommodate the needs of our student population. However, to be successful in an online environment students should be able to manage their time efficiently and stay on task. Here are some tips for success in your online course.

How to Succeed in Online Math Courses

1. Manage Your Time Effectively

Most online students have job and family commitments in addition to their schoolwork. Plan and make a weekly schedule ahead of time. Set aside time to complete your assignments regularly throughout the week. Plan for busy times at work or at home and factor those periods into your study schedule.

Note that summer sessions are shorter than fall and spring semesters, and therefore must cover the material at an advanced pace. Please discuss with your advisor before signing up for multiple summer courses.

2. Stay Organized

Have a dedicated space for your learning, take notes and keep your study materials organized so that you can review for an exam effectively.

3. Use Available Resources

The instructor for your course has put together resources to help you learn and retain the material for the course. Use these resources and reach out for anything extra you might need. When you watch videos, take notes which will help you learn as well as prepare for an exam.

4. Connect With Your Instructor

Since you do not get to see and meet with your instructor regularly like in traditional face-to-face classes, it is especially important to communicate with your instructor and seek help when you need it. Most of our instructors respond to emails within 24-72 hours and are also available for virtual office hours during the week.

5. Connect With Your Tutor and Attend Study Sessions

In addition to your instructor’s office hours, some of our online Math courses provide additional one-to-one tutoring services. These tutors exclusively serve our online students and are available to schedule appointments during evening and weekend hours.

If your course has a dedicated tutor available, make sure to connect with your tutor and reach out to them if you need help with the course material.
