Evaluation
- For persons hired at mid-year, the half-year of service shall count as full-year toward tenure. Thus, for someone that started service in January of 2021, he/she will be considered as being in the second year of probation for 2021-22.
- Time spent on leave of absence or developmental leave may be counted as academic service. Faculty members should obtain the approval of the chair, dean, and Vice President for Academic Affairs if they choose to extend their probationary period due to a leave of absence or developmental leave.
- A request for an extension of the probationary period will be submitted at any time, but no later than the end of the academic year prior to the year in which the review for tenure is scheduled to occur.

Developmental Leave
The College of Arts & Sciences supports professional developmental leave for the purpose of enhancing a faculty member’s ability to contribute to the UND pillars of learning and discovery. Developmental leave is considered an investment by the College. As such, developmental leave is not an entitlement, and it is not awarded solely on the basis of longevity at the university; it is awarded on the merits of a specific proposal for professional development that benefits the individual, department, college, and university. Proposals that demonstrate the greatest potential for scholarly or pedagogical growth and accomplishment will be the most competitive.
To qualify for developmental leave, a candidate must be a full-time faculty member (tenure line or special appointment) who meets the following criteria:
- At least six years of full-time continuous service has passed since hiring or since the last developmental leave;
- Intent to return to the University for a period of further service equal to or greater than the length of the proposed leave;
- At the time of application, the faculty member received ratings of meets expectations or higher in all areas in the past three annual evaluation cycles.
A developmental leave project will be considered if:
- The faculty member filed a final report addressing outcomes for all previous leaves. Information from any past leaves given in these reports will be used as an indicator of the candidate’s ability to successfully complete proposed developmental leave activities.
- A substantive and tangible product is the ultimate expected outcome.
- The proposed project was not the subject of a prior developmental leave.
- The proposed project would benefit significantly from, or would not be possible without, the developmental leave.
Faculty proposals should follow the guidelines designated by the VPAA and must be submitted to and approved by the department chair. Proposals are then submitted to the A&S College Office, where they are reviewed and ranked by the A&S Executive Committee using the College’s Developmental Leave Merit Guidelines. This committee makes recommendations to the Dean. Proposals that are approved by the Dean are then submitted to the VPAA for review.
It is important to note that meritorious proposals may not be supported, or leave may be delayed, if an acceptable plan for maintaining the department mission and operations cannot be developed or implemented.
Developmental leave may be granted for one or two semesters. A leave of more than one semester is normally taken in consecutive (fall, spring) terms. Developmental leave may not exceed 12 months. Typically, special appointment faculty may request a one semester leave; tenure line faculty may request a leave of one or two semesters.
During this period, a faculty member on developmental leave may not accept employment from any other person, institution, corporation, or government, unless the University determines that it would be in the best public interest to do so and expressly approves the employment. Any such additional compensation must be explained on the proposal form and may not unduly interfere with the objective of the leave or create a conflict of interest or commitment with the University.
Faculty on developmental leave receive 70% of their base salary as a “stipend” while on leave. Fringe benefits, including insurance, will continue. Retirement contributions will be made as a proportion of the actual stipend, not the full-time contract salary. No annual or sick leave will accumulate during the period of leave. You can take your university issued laptop with you while on leave, though you will need to fill out necessary paperwork for doing so overseas. If you plan to work outside of North Dakota for more than 30 days, you will also need to complete a Flexplace Agreement and paperwork necessary for UND to coordinate compensation coverage for you outside of the state. You will also be required to have taxes withheld for the state in which you are working.
The following are required of all faculty returning from leave:
- As a condition of developmental leave, faculty agree to return to UND upon completion of the leave for a period of time at least equal to the leave time or refund the institution’s stipend payments.
- If a faculty member accepts other employment during developmental leave, then, unless such employment is approved as part of the developmental leave program, the University’s obligation under the developmental leave agreement is terminated and the employee’s resignation becomes effective immediately upon such employment during the development leave.
- Reimbursement of the stipend payments made during the period of developmental leave prior to the date of employee’s resignation shall be made within a reasonable time and in no event later than 60 days after written notice is given to the University of intent to not return for the specified period of leave.
- Upon the faculty member’s return from developmental leave, the faculty member is required to submit a report on their study and travel during the leave period that will be reviewed by the same approval levels as the initial developmental leave proposal. The VPAA provides guidelines for what to include in this report.
