About Undergraduate Chemistry at UND
Generally, about 15 to 20 students graduate with chemistry majors each year ensuring close interaction with faculty. The number of students includes transfer students and those who switch to chemistry from other majors after their first year. Various scholarships are available to incoming and current Chemistry students.
Programs & Requirements
The majority of chemistry majors complete the degree requirements in four years.
B.S. in Chemistry
American Chemical Society (ACS) Certified Degree. This degree is recommended for students who want the best preparation for a chemistry career, including graduate school.
B.S. in Chemistry, Physical Science Option
This option is a good fit for students who are considering Teaching Certification, double majors, or who want to have a minor in another program. Students choosing this option can easily fit pre-med course requirements around the curriculum leading to this degree.
B.S. with a major in Chemistry, Biochemistry Option
This track is recommended for pre-health and pre-med students or students who want to have a second major. Because of the lower level of math required, this track is not suggested for students who are considering graduate programs in chemistry.

In-Person, Online or Enroll Anytime Courses
Undergraduate chemistry students can take courses a variety of different ways.
- With on-campus lecture, students attend class sessions with an instructor. Assignments and exams have set deadlines. Attending lecture on campus is best for those who work well with in-person instruction and firm deadlines.
- Taking online courses, students watch lecture videos and complete readings on their own time. Assignments are completed by the end of each week.This option is best for students who are independent but still want the structure of weekly deadlines.
- If students choose Enroll Anytime courses, they will complete course lessons at their own pace within 9 months. Enroll Anyime is best for independent students who need complete flexibility and can set their own deadlines.
