Language Scholarships

Interested students should discuss education abroad plans with a member of the faculty before submitting a scholarship application.

The following scholarships, made possible through the generosity of many private individuals, are awarded to qualified UND students though Student Finance upon nomination by the faculty of the Department of Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures. Students must be declared degree-seekers in a language program or International Studies to be eligible for these awards. Scholarship deadlines are December 1st for Spring/Summer travel abroad and March 1st for Summer/Fall travel abroad and general academic scholarships. The amounts of the awards vary.

Applications for all departmental and program scholarships are available at Scholarship Central. 

Scholarship Options

John G. Arneberg Foreign Travel Scholarships

The purpose of these scholarships is "to encourage and improve education in foreign languages, preferably the German, Scandinavian, and French languages," although awards have also been made to students of Chinese, Greek, Latin, and Spanish. John G. Arneberg stated that his principal objective in establishing this trust was "to promote better international relations through better knowledge and understanding of the languages, customs, literature, art and traditions of other countries," and he stipulated that scholarships were to be awarded to University of North Dakota language students who had shown "exceptional interest and proficiency in the field." In recent years about twenty-five scholarships have been awarded annually in amounts up to about $2500.

Paul W. Larsen On-Campus Scholarships

Larsen On-Campus Scholarships are granted annually to outstanding students of all languages, as well as to students studying certain other subjects in the humanities, for use while in residence at UND. In recent years about five awards have been made annually in amounts ranging up to $500.00. Awards are announced in May for use the following year.

Diane J. Weber Foreign Language Scholarship

The Diane J. Weber Foreign Language scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship. Eligible applicants are any students currently majoring in a Foreign Language who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and who will be studying abroad (outside of the United States) during the following academic year.

Phyllis and Dr. Homer Rovelstad Scholarship

Allocations from the endowment will provide one or more scholarships to students majoring in Classical Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Dakota.

Demetrius and Barbara Georgacas Memorial Scholarship

Allocations from the endowment will provide for one or more scholarships to current University of North Dakota student(s) who are majoring in Languages within the College of Arts and Sciences. The recipient(s) shall have a proven record of academic achievement and the strong potential to succeed in the future. Preference shall be given to student studying Latin, Greek, Japanese or German. However, the selection process may depart from this preference for students of exceptional promise in other languages.

Ronald and Carol Vantine International Scholars Scholarships

Vantine Scholarships are granted by priority to students studying the languages of "countries having an economic and/or political impact on the state of the world, currently, for example, China, Africa, India, Arab countries." The scholarships are awarded through the University of North Dakota Foundation.

Marie Thormodsgard French Scholarship

This scholarship in honor of Marie Thormodsgard is awarded to an exceptional undergraduate student majoring in French. A native of Bordeaux, France, Marie Thormodsgard (formerly Marie Bentegeat), came to North Dakota as an international exchange student, and subsequently continued as a language instructor for several years at the University of North Dakota.

A merit-based scholarship, this award is given to a student who has completed three years of French or more while in residence at the University of North Dakota. During his/her career at UND, the student will have achieved a high scholastic average in all areas of study. Preference is given to students who have advanced knowledge of conversational French. The scholarship has a minimum disbursement amount of $500.00 and is awarded intermittently, based on the availability of funds. There is no application process for this award. The faculty members in the French section select the scholarship recipient.

Bernhardt Leser Graduate Scholarship

Enrolled UND graduate students who pursue regular studies at an institution abroad in Germany, France, or Scandinavia are eligible for this award. Student must demonstrate academic accomplishment, dedication, and promise in the field of study. An outstanding student may receive the award more than once.

Ben and Marguerite Rodgers German Studies Scholarship

German majors beginning their senior year a UND are eligible for this scholarship. 

Emil and Audrey Stoltz German Studies Scholarship

Third-year students majoring in German at UND are eligible for this scholarship. 

Herbert Boswau Memorial Travel Scholarship

Students traveling abroad are eligible for this scholarship. 

Herbert Boswau German Heritage Fund

This award provides German textbooks, free of charge, for students beginning their third year of German study at UND.

Demetrius and Barbara Georgacas Memorial Scholarship

John G. Arneberg Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students in German (and other languages) for travel and study abroad.

Note: This scholarship must be applied for. Applications forms can be found in the main office in December/January and are usually due in January/February.

Bernhardt Leser Graduate Scholarship

Enrolled UND graduate students who pursue regular studies at an institution abroad in Germany, France, or Scandinavia are eligible for this award. Student must demonstrate academic accomplishment, dedication, and promise in the field of study. An outstanding student may receive the award more than once.

Max Kade Stipends

In recent years, the German Program has successfully applied for grants to provide scholarships to students participating in summer faculty-guided study abroad programs.

Andrew Honve Norwegian Scholarship

Enrolled UND undergraduate students who have declared a Norwegian minor or major are eligible, and the recipient(s) must enroll in a Norwegian course for the academic year of the scholarship OR enroll in a study abroad program in Norway. Monies may be used for on-campus courses or study abroad. Student must demonstrate academic accomplishment, dedication, and promise in the field of study. An outstanding student may receive the award more than once.

Dr. and Mrs. John A. Johnson Norwegian Scholarship

The top sophomore (second year) student enrolled in Norwegian language courses receives this award. Enrolled UND undergraduate students who have declared a Norwegian minor or major are eligible, and the recipient must enroll in a Norwegian course for the academic year of the scholarship. Student must demonstrate academic accomplishment, dedication, and promise in the field of study.

Art and Mary Saastad Norwegian Scholarship

Outstanding Norwegian language and literature students receive this award. Enrolled UND undergraduate students who have declared a Norwegian minor or major are eligible, and the recipient(s) must enroll in a Norwegian course for the academic year of the scholarship OR enroll in a study abroad program in Norway. Monies may be used for on-campus courses or study abroad. Funds can also be used to travel to an academic conference such as SASS or other Norwegian scholarly activities. Student must demonstrate academic accomplishment, dedication, and promise in the field of study. An outstanding student may receive the award more than once.

Aaron Iverson Nordic Travel Scholarship

The Aaron Iverson Nordic Travel Scholarship was established by the Iverson Family in honor of their son, who studied abroad in Norway. This scholarship will be awarded to a UND student who participates in the American College of Norway semester or academic year study abroad program. Students must be motivated, hard-working and dedicated, who share high principles and potential for success as seen in Aaron Iverson. Recipients of this award are requested to visit the Resistance Museum on Oslo, Norway. Award amounts will range from $500-$1000 each year. Contact the Office of International Programs for more information.

Paul W. Larsen Travel Scholarships

Larsen Travel Scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding UND students of Spanish who are planning to travel to Spain or Latin America. In recent years about six awards have been made annually in amounts ranging up to $500.

Graciela Wilborn Spanish Scholarship

Awarded as funds allow to an outstanding junior or senior student of strong ethical character who is a student in the Spanish program. To be considered for the scholarship, students must have an overall GPA of 3.8 or better. Candidates for the award are nominated by the Spanish faculty in April of most years.
