First Year Seminar course and serves as an introduction to the study of art and design in the Department of Art & Design at the University of North Dakota. ART 200. Intro to Sculpture. 3 Credits.
In this introductory studio course, we will explore the philosophy, aesthetics, history, and processes of sculpture. Basic skills will be developed in the classroom studio. ART 204. Intro to Jewelry & Metalsmithing. 3 Credits.
This studio course is an investigation into the tools, techniques, and processes fundamental to the designing and fabrication of contemporary wearable and non-wearable art executed predominantly in precious/semi-precious metal. The principles will be practiced and studied through individual projects, leading to proficiency for the making of body adornments, holloware, and simple fabricated objects. ART 240. Intro to Printmaking. 3 Credits.
Basic printmaking processes will be introduced, including collagraphy, linocut, dry point intaglio and stenciling. History and development of traditional printmaking techniques will also be presented. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. F,S.
ART 245. Intro to Black and White Film Photography. 3 Credits.
Introduction to black and white photography in a visual arts environment. Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of fine art photography through the practice of visualization and print making. ART 250. Intro to Ceramics: Handbuilding. 3 Credits.
Introduction to ceramics techniques. A beginning course introducing handbuilding techniques. Proficiency in the basic hand forming processes and glazing techniques and an understanding of the clay and firing processes are achieved through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and readings. ART 253. Intro to Ceramics: Throwing. 3 Credits.
Throwing is the process by which a form is made on the potter's wheel. Emphasis is placed on centering the clay on the wheel and mastering basic forms, shaping techniques and glaze application as well as firing processes. This is achieved through lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and readings. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. F,S.
ART 260. Intro to Color Photography. 3 Credits.
A beginning non-darkroom oriented class in color photography emphasizing the aesthetic, design and compositional aspects of this artistic medium. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. F,S.
ART 273. Intro to Graphic Design. 3 Credits.
An introduction to the art, language, key elements, theory and practice of graphic design. This course will focus on the integration of type, imagery and spatial relationships in design. Students will be introduced to the conceptual design process, communicating with clients, high quality crafting and production. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. F,S.
ART 300. Intermediate Sculpture-Wood Fabrication. 3 Credits.
This studio course we will explore wood fabrication while expanding students' skills and understanding of wood as a material for sculpture. Students will experiment with pattern, surface, line, planes, form, scale and color as well as other physical manipulations. All projects will have a strong conceptual foundation at the core of the hands-on mode of making. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite: ART 200. F.
ART 302. Intermediate Sculpture-Metal Fabrication. 3 Credits.
This studio course we will explore metal fabrication while expanding students' skills and understanding of metal as material for sculpture. Students will experiment with pattern, surface, line, plane, form, scale and color as well as other physical manipulations. All projects will have a strong conceptual foundation at the core of the hands-on mode of making. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite: ART 200. S.
ART 304. Intermediate Ceramics. 3 Credits.
This course will have specific technical ceramic applications, applicable to the exploration of intermediate level hand building and/or throwing techniques. The conceptual development of the student's work is encouraged and may include both ceramic work and/or readings. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite: ART 250 or ART 253. F,S.
ART 305. Intermediate Jewelry Design: Stone Setting and Commercial Skills. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Specialized techniques and processes utilized in the commercial jewelry industry will be used to produce works ranging from body adornment to small sculpture. Emphasis will be placed on commercial jewelry skills including faceted stone setting and basic jewelry repair. Prerequisite: ART 204. F.
ART 306. Intermediate Jewelry Design: Digital Fabrication, Casting and Mass Production. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Specialized techniques and processes utilized in digital fabrication and mass production will be used to produce works ranging from body adornment to small sculpture. Students will learn basic CAD design using industry standard software, 3D printing, direct casting, and mass production processes. Prerequisite: ART 204. S.
ART 307. Intermediate Jewelry Design: Digital Jewelry Design. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Jewelry and Metalsmithing as well as ART 306. Specialized techniques and processes utilized in digital design will be used to produce jewelry designs ready for 3D printing and production. Students expand upon digital jewelry design using industry standard software. Advanced modeling techniques and practices will be covered. Prerequisite: ART 204 and ART 306. F,S.
ART 308. Intermediate Jewelry and Metalsmithing: Fabrication. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Specialized techniques and processes of metal fabrication will be used to produce works ranging from body adornment to small sculpture. Large scale fabrication, mechanisms, and clasps may be covered. Prerequisite: ART 204. S.
ART 309. Intermediate Jewelry and Metalsmithing: Enameling- Image and Color. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Specialized techniques and processes in vitreous enamel will produce works ranging from body adornment to small sculpture. The application of vitreous enamel and associated image and color techniques will be covered. Prerequisite: ART 204. F.
ART 310. Intermediate Jewelry and Metalsmithing: Forging, Forming and Raising. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Specialized techniques and processes utilized in metal forming including cold forging and raising will produce works ranging from body adornment to small sculpture. Shaping and forming of metal through hammering will be covered. Prerequisite: ART 204. S.
ART 312. Intermediate Painting. 3 Credits.
This studio course will build on fundamentals established in Introduction to Painting (ART 220). Exercises focusing on the representation of observed form and space are then applied and practiced through more expansive and individualized projects. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite or Corequisite: ART 220. F,S.
ART 330. Intermediate Drawing. 3 Credits.
This studio course will build on fundamentals established in Introduction to Drawing (ART 230). Exercises focusing on using wet and dry media to represent observed form and space are then applied and practiced through more expansive and individualized projects. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite or Corequisite: ART 230. F,S.
ART 340. Intermediate Printmaking: Relief and Intaglio. 3 Credits.
Students will build on the basic printmaking processes with an emphasis on relief and intaglio. Methods presented will include copper plate etching techniques, color linocut, and letterpress with an introduction to basic silkscreen. Reading assignments with written response will focus on various artists and techniques. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite: ART 240. F.
ART 341. Intermediate Printmaking: Silkscreen and Monoprint. 3 Credits.
Students will build on the basic printmaking processes with an emphasis on silkscreen and monoprint. Methods presented will include monoprint and photo silkscreen techniques, basic copper plate etching and color linocut. Reading assignments with written response will focus on various artists and techniques. Appropriate art safety instructions will be included. Prerequisite: ART 240. F,S.
ART 368. Intermediate Photo: Alternative Processes. 3 Credits.
This course teaches alternative photography processes: cyanotype, tintypes, and Van Dyke brown. Students are encouraged to combine these techniques with contemporary imagery. Prerequisite: ART 245 or ART 260. F.
ART 369. Intermediate Photo: Light and Subject. 3 Credits.
This course teaches students to use different forms of lighting for portraiture and still-life imagery. Emphasis placed on technique, content, and printing. Prerequisite: ART 245 or ART 260. S.
ART 384. Intermediate Graphic Design: Packaging and Print Design. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Graphic Design. Students will focus on application of graphic design principles to environmental and three-dimensional material including packaging and product branding as well as multipage layout and composition for print applications such as books and magazines. Prerequisite: ART 273. F.
ART 385. Intermediate Graphic Design: Motion Graphics. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Graphic Design. Students will focus on application of graphic design principles to motion graphics. Students will use Aftereffects and explore a variety of real-world applications such as graphics for television and explainer videos. Prerequisite: ART 273. S.
ART 386. Intermediate Graphic Design: Interactive Design. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Graphic Design. Students will focus on application of graphic design principles to UX design. Discussion of web design and application prototyping will be covered. Prerequisite: ART 273. F.
ART 387. Intermediate Graphic Design: 3-D Modeling and Animation. 3 Credits.
A continuation and expansion of Introduction to Graphic Design. Students will be introduced to various methods of 3D modeling, rendering, and basic animation. Applications as they relate to graphic design will be discussed. Prerequisite: ART 273. S.
ART 400. Advanced Sculpture. 3 Credits.
Advanced studio focuses on contemporary sculptural practices. This course allows students to further investigate and develop their own interests and choices of materials within the scope of the rotating topics, ie, casting, installation, public art, additive, reductive and 4D modes of making. ART 401. Advanced Jewelry and Metalsmithing. 3 Credits.

ART 402. Advanced Painting. 3 Credits.
This studio course will build on fundamentals established in Intermediate Painting (ART 312). Through hands-on experience, demonstration, lecture, and critique students will gain a deeper understanding of painting as an artistic practice. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. ART 403. Advanced Printmaking. 3 Credits.

ART 404. Advanced Ceramics. 3 Credits.
This course will focus on advanced studio practices applicable to the exploration of advanced level hand building and/or throwing techniques. The conceptual development of the student's work is essential and may include both ceramic work and/or readings. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included. ART 405. Advanced Photography. 3 Credits.

This course offers an intensive engagement with the practice of jewelry and metalsmithing. ART 408. Ceramics: Intensive. 3-6 Credits.
This course offers an intensive engagement within the practices of contemporary Ceramics. Through hands-on experience, discussion, and critique, students will attain a deeper understanding of their own approach to artmaking. This will allow students to further investigate and develop their own interests as they work toward producing a portfolio and completing their BFA exhibition. ART 409. Photography Intensive. 3-6 Credits.
This course offers an intensive level of study in fine art photography. Students will focus solely on the creation of photographic work for their BFA exhibition. Appropriate safety instruction will be included. Prerequisite: ART 405. F,S.
ART 410. Advanced History of Art. 3 Credits.
Study of varied topics in the history of art and architecture. May be repeated as title changes. Possible subjects may include but are not limited to: Non-Western Traditions, 20th & 21st Century Art, Late 18th through 19th Century Art, Renaissance & Baroque Art and Feminist Art. ART 411. Sculpture Intensive. 3-6 Credits.
Sculpture Intensive class, learning effective art making practices is equally important as the actual artworks you will produce. Intensive studio focuses on contemporary sculptural practices.
