English Department Scholarships
Due to the generosity of alumni, friends, and donors, several scholarships are available to students seeking an English degree.

William Budge Scholarship
A&S - English; Criteria: to be used to further the study of English by one or more selected students.
Evelyn Sundby Himes Scholarship
A&S – English; Endowment Criteria: to fund scholarship awards at the University of North Dakota for deserving students who have demonstrated proficiency in the field of English. Financial need, scholastic ability, and personal character shall be considered in selecting the scholarship recipients.
Daniel Sheridan Memorial Scholarship
A&S – English; Endowment Criteria: to fund an annual scholarship to a student who has been admitted to the Department of Teaching and Learning and planning a career as a secondary English teacher. Recipients of the Dan Sheridan Memorial Scholarship must be motivated and hard working students who possesses high principles and potential.
Josephine Clarke Taillon Scholarship
A&S - English; Established for a scholarship fund in the English Department.
Myrtle Duncan McCrea Memorial Scholarship
A&S – English; Endowment Criteria: to provide scholarships to students at the University of North Dakota who have declared English and/or English Literature as their major. Recipients shall be of good moral character with personalities and attitudes which suit them well for the continued study of English and/or English Literature. Recipients must show high scholastic potential and achievement. Demonstration of financial need shall not be a specific requirement or limitation for recipients of this scholarship.
Vernon Squires/Ethel Wood Memorial Scholarship
The income from the endowment will be used “for the highest priority needs” in the Department of English “which include, but are not limited to, student scholarships….”
Kathrine B. Tiffany Scholarship
Awarded to “. . . undergraduate students of sophomore, junior, or senior rank, or a graduate student majoring in English. . . .” This scholarship will not be based on need.
Mary K. Wiper Memorial Endowment Scholarship
Awarded “to students majoring in Honors, English, and Environmental Studies . . . on an annual rotating basis in order as listed. . . students who have attended high school in a rural North Dakota community . . . [or] any North Dakota high school graduate. . . . grade point average of 3.3 or higher. . . .”
Carol Dean Brenna Scholarship
Allocations will provide scholarship assistance for one or more qualified students within the College of Arts and Sciences. Recipients shall be pursuing a degree in English, Art, Music or Theater Arts and have at least a 2.5 GPA. First preference shall be given to students from Hatton or Northwood, North Dakota. If there are no students from these two towns, then the scholarship will be made available to any student(s) from North Dakota meeting the above criteria.

Julia Porter Cape Scholarship
A&S – English; Endowment Criteria: to provide scholarships for female students pursuing an undergraduate degree with a major in English.
Neva Hydle MacMaster/A.D. MacMaster English Scholarship
A&S – English; Endowment Criteria: to provide scholarships to deserving students majoring in English within the College of Arts and Sciences. Recipients shall be of good moral character with personalities and attitudes which suite them well for the continued study of the English language. Recipients must show high scholastic potential and achievement. Demonstration of financial need shall not be a specific requirement or limitation for recipients of this scholarship.
Neva Hydle MacMaster/Nellie Hydle Johnson Scholarship
A&S – English; Endowment Criteria: One or more of these scholarships will be provided annually to deserving English majors in the School of Education or the School of Arts at the University of North Dakota. The benefited students should be of good moral character with personalities and attitudes which suit them well for the continued study of the English language. They must show high scholastic potential and achievement. Having a financial need shall not be a specific requirement or limitation for recipients of this scholarship.
Donald J. “Jack” Robertson Memorial Scholarship
A&S – English; It is the Donors’ wish that these scholarships be used to assist English majors who 1) have demonstrated proficiency in English skills, 2) have a proven history of high academic achievement, 3) participate in volunteer activities and events which enhance University and community life, 4) and are of good and strong moral character. In consideration of all of the above, a student’s financial need can be a factor in a scholarship determination.
Violet Eastman Lima Scholarship
Awarded “to students who are in need of financial assistance and who are enrolled . . . with either a major or a minor in drama or English.” (given to English every other year)

Robert G. Rust Scholarship
Allocations from this endowment will provide scholarship(s) for student(s) obtaining their master’s degree in English within the University of North Dakota.
Robert & Mary Caldwell Memorial Scholarship
. . . to a student who is a Masters or Doctoral candidate. . . . eligible . . . at such a time as he or she has had a thesis or dissertation topic approved.
Henry Andrew and Mary Ellice Doak Scholarship
“.. . . for graduate students with outstanding talents in any aspect of the English language, including literature and creative or technical writing.”
Norton D. Kinghorn Memorial Award
“. . . awarded for outstanding thesis or dissertation.”
Writing Awards
Gladys Boen Scholarship
The award will be made for the best short story, poem or collection of poem, or essay submitted by an undergraduate currently enrolled in the university. The award is given with the intention of encouraging outstanding creative and critical writing, particularly by freshmen and sophomores” (12/1973).
Thomas McGrath Award
…will be given to the student whose poem or group of poems is judged best. The competition is open to graduate students and undergraduate students enrolled during the spring semester.
John Little Fiction Scholarship
…will be given to the student whose fiction is judged best. The competition is open to graduate students and undergraduate students enrolled during the spring semester.
