Department of Sociology
Why Study Sociology?
A degree in sociology is useful for two reasons – it can help you develop a broader perspective in your future work, as well as the skills you need to collect and analyze data. When you get a degree in sociology, you’ll learn:
- To synthesize information and arguments to make informed decisions
- Data analysis skills using real-world data and software applications
- Effective interpersonal communication and team work
- Writing and speaking for professional audiences
Sociologists see the world as being shaped by social factors – sex, age, race, ethnicity, education, sexual orientation, social class. An understanding of these factors is critical in both your personal and professional life. The sociological perspective helps you see the importance of social identities and develop a broader view of how the various pieces making up society are interconnected.
Double Majors
The Sociology B.A. is easily matched with other majors and degrees at UND, including Criminal Justice. With this pairing, you get not only two majors, but two degrees – a B.A. in Sociology and a B.S. in Criminal Justice Studies.
Variety of Career Fields
A degree in sociology provides a solid foundation that enhances your work in other disciplines. A major or minor in sociology can add value in a variety of career fields, including:
- Human services
- Criminal justice

- Advocacy work
It’s also a good foundation for those who want to pursue graduate or professional studies in sociology, law, counseling, and other fields. And with online options, you'll have the flexibility you need to add pursuit of a double major or minor to your schedule.
