Presser Scholar Awarded to Matthew Sebald
The Theodore Presser Scholarly Award recipient is selected by the faculty and Chair of the Department of Music solely on the basis of the merit and achievement of the student. This is an honor award and the student, in his or her senior year, is to be known as a Presser Scholar. The award comes with a cash stipend.
The 2017 Presser Scholar winner is Matthew Sebald of Shakopee, MN. Matthew started playing music at age 7. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. He was the winner of the 2016 Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and the 2015 UND Mozart Piano Concerto Competition. He was the runner up for the 2017 GGFSO Concerto Competition.
Theodore Presser is remembered not only as the publisher of "Etude," the music magazine, and the founder of the great publishing firm bearing his name, but as a philanthropist who specialized in music education.
The Presser Foundation has four primary areas of interest:
- To provide awards to students of music
- To enhance music education and performance
- To advance the study and appreciation of music
- To provide financial relief to worthy teachers of music in distress.
The University of North Dakota is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
