Theatre Arts Facilities
The Department of Theatre Arts utilizes various facilities for programming, technical work and productions.
The major performance facility of Theatre Arts is the Burtness Theatre. Burtness Theatre is located on Centennial Drive, in the central campus, just across the street from the campus quad.
The architectural style of the central campus includes classic to modern interpretations of the "collegiate Gothic" theme. The campus is admired for its spaciousness and beauty in all seasons, and particularly for its flowers in summer and fall.
Burtness Theatre sits near the beautiful English Coulee, and near the Celebrate Park, which features the Adelphi Fountain. This vista of the Coulee features access to walking paths, and recreational opportunities, and is one of the most photographed spots in eastern North Dakota.
Included in Burtness Theatre are a 365-seat proscenium theatre, a flexible seating laboratory theatre (shown below), and scenic and costume shops. While Burtness is 55 years old, major equipment purchases in lighting and sound and other remodeling projects help maintain this theatre as one of the best in the region.
The main offices of the Department of Theatre Arts are located just east of Burtness Theatre in historic Merrifield Hall. Various facilities on UND campus for Theatre Arts include: a newly updated dance studio in Hyslop, classrooms, rehearsal spaces and a design studio in Merrifield Hall. Costume and properties are stored in Montgomery Hall.
