Elementary school outreach: Science for Kids
May 2014
***IMAGE REMOVED***In May we went again to local elementary school with our outreach program. Two class of third graders was taught how the molecules are build, what are the gases around us such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, and had fun to experiment with the gas properties testing expansion of CO2 from solid state to the gas state, burning in the oxygen and saw the explosion of a hydrogen balloon.

Biobased Chemical Workshop at UND visit us on facebook
The "Beyond Crude Oil: Biobased Chemicals and Fuels Workshop"is typically organized
during UND spring break for high school seniors and juniors.
During workshop students learn from short presentations by faculty members in UND
Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Atmospheric Sciences about
Renewable Fuels and Chemicals from Biomass, The Age of Polymers: from Natural to Renewable,
Properties and Applications of Polymers and Composites, and Chemical Analysis – Eye
of Mass Spectrometry.
Further students participate in tours of the UND Airport to see UND research aircraft
and the Chemistry Department.
While touring the Chemistry Department, students see and work on hands-on demonstrations
that will includegeneration of biofuel:transesterification and using the manure, microbial
production of enzymes, chemistry of polymers:sodium alginate and acrylate snow, modeling
chemistry of biofuels and polymers, and mass spectrometry and analysis of polymers
activities. Students will learn not only about biobased chemicals and fuels but will
interact with graduate student guides and learn about life on the campus.

Kari, Patrick and Rich receive Chemistry awards
October 2013
***IMAGE REMOVED*** Richard Cochran received Dr, Roland G. Severson Graduate Research scholarship. Patrick Olson recieved Dr. Harold W. Haugan scholarship ad Kari Kusler received Dr. Walter H. Moran scholarship. In May 2013 Kari also Received award from Minnesota Chromatography Forum (only one award is given) for her proposal "Analytical Method Development for Determination of Trans-resveratrol and its Metabolites in Biological Samples." Keri later presented first data obtained at 8th Undergraduate Research in the Molecular Sciences (URMS) held on the campus of Minnesota State University, Moorhead and received a travel award to attend the upcoming National ACS meeting.
Science for Kids
July 2013
***IMAGE REMOVED***In July we had here three-days with K-3 kids (~60) - one day as part of program of Young Scientists/Engineer Academy and two following days coordinated local summer day-care. Kids learned how the molecules are build, what are the gases around us such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and had fun to experiment with the gas properties testing expansion of CO2 from solid state to the gas state. Burning in the oxygen and saw the explosion of a hydrogen balloon.

Rich received prestigious travel award to the meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau Germany. Rich came along with nearly 550 other young researchers from about 78 countries, attending this elite gathering in Lindau to discuss topics on an array of chemistry topics. Students and researchers alike used the forum to voice their ideas and discuss various projects all while building international networks. Rich's accomplishments go beyond research focusing also on outreach, not only within the department working on steering committee for Air Pollution workshop, but also completing impressive work in Turtle Mountain Tribal College within ACS funded program CERAIS (Rich is a co-PI), on a setup of the analytical lab and providing research experiences for the American Indian students.
