College of Arts & Sciences Peer Mentors
The mission of the Peer Mentor program in the College of Arts & Sciences at UND is to help students set and attain academic, personal, social, and career goals by offering a peer perspective. Peer mentors serve as role models for persistence and success when representing the College and University to prospective students. They also help new students acclimate to college life and support students in the College of Arts & Sciences through advising and mentoring.
Peer Mentor tasks/responsibilities:
- prospective student visits/fairs (both on and off campus)
- new freshman and transfer student orientation
- advising/mentoring for specific student populations (e.g., undeclared, academically underprepared, probation)
What is the recruitment process?
Applications will be reviewed for minimum requirements, and those who meet the requirements will have their applications forwarded onto a committee for review.
Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted by email to set up an interview time. Interviews will take place in March.
Some interviewees will be invited as finalists (called “Mentor Candidates” at this time) to shadow current Peer Mentors during the Spring semester for at least 5 hours. Mentor Candidates are REQUIRED to take advantage of this training opportunity.
Those who decide to continue in the program following their shadow hours will complete the 1 credit online training seminar (A&S 100) over the summer.
Following the summer training, successful candidates will be offered contracts to begin mentoring in the Fall semester. Peer Mentors will earn credit in the Fall and Spring semesters in the form of A&S 497 (Internship) or an internship or applied experience within their major.
Applications are due by the first Friday in February each year.
