The Master of Arts in Theatre Arts at UND is a generalist program with the opportunity for students to select an area of focus suited to their future plans.
The MA at UND approaches theatre as a study of or for performance. All students take a common core of classes in the foundations of research and dramatic criticism and are required to take six credits in some area of performance.
Graduate Faculty members offer seminars in a rich variety of areas including acting theory, performance study, playwritng, and theatre history. The two-year program includes 26-28 credits, comprehensive exams, and a thesis for 4 credits.
The thesis requirement may be fulfilled by writing a traditional scholarly thesis or by combining a performance project with a shorter thesis.
Recent thesis projects include the following topics:
•A Comparison of the Original West Side Story with Revivals.
•The Direction and Analysis of Swimming in the Shallows.
•Acting in and Analyzing a Character in Anton in Show Business.
•Designing the Set and Technical Direction for Swimming in the Shallows.
•The Process of Writing and Performing and Original One-Man Show.
First year graduate students work with the Director of Graduate Studies in the department to design a program suited to their needs. At the end of their second semester students select a thesis advisor and committee to advise and oversee their projects. Recent Graduates:
•Heather Williams completed her Ph. D at Bowling Green and is teaching at the University of Findlay.
•Darin Kerr is in the Ph. D program at Bowling Green.
•Misti Koop acting in a touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
•Kelly Daley completed an MFA in Design at the University of Nebraska and is designing scenery in Chicago.
•Ali Davidson completed her Ph. D. at Wayne State and is teaching at Minot State.
•Kelly McLoud is teaching at South Dakota State University.
