Scholarships
The Department of Physics and Astrophysics offers the following scholarships to current physics majors at the University of North Dakota. Awards are generally made once a year and can range from $2,000 and up in amount. Scholarship applications are due April 1 each year and can be downloaded from the link given below. Jay O. and Marie Bjerkaas Scholarship Fund
The Jay and Marie Bjerkaas Scholarship fund was established by the children of Jay and Marie Bjerkaas to honor their parents. Jay Bjerkaas was born in Little Sauk, MN and attended the University of North Dakota from 1927 to 1929 as a physics major. The Jay & Marie Bjerkass Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding physics major from Minnesota or North Dakota. All physics majors, including freshman physics majors with a GPA of at least 3.0 during the last three years of high school, are eligible to apply.
C. J. Karzmark Scholarship Endowment
The C. J. Karzmark Scholarship was established to provide financial support to students who have declared a major in physics, are of high moral character, and have demonstrated a record of high academic achievement and financial need. Preference is given to students from Casselton, ND, but students from elsewhere in North Dakota will be considered. C. J. Karzmark was born in 1920 in Casselton, ND, and attended the University of North Dakota, majoring in physics. He received his Ph.D. in 1952 from the University of Indiana in the field of nuclear physics, and went on to pioneer the use of linear accelerators for medical physics. Dr. Karzmark, Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology, Stanford University, passed away in 2005.
Daniel P. Michelsen Memorial Scholarship
The Daniel P. Michelson Memorial Scholarship was established by the Daniel P. Michelsen Estate, Moorhead, MN, and provides assistance to qualified students who are pursuing a degree in physics within the College of Arts & Science, University of North Dakota. Recipients shall be juniors or seniors, with preference given to such students who are residents of North Dakota or Minnesota. Daniel P. Michelson received his bachelor's degree in Physics in 1986, and his M.S. in 1988.
