Monte Carlo method applied to optical coherence tomography design
In this talk will be presented methods to model light transport in tissues based on advanced Monte Carlo methods applied to optical coherence tomography design. This method efficiently accounts for the ballistic and the multipath diffusive scattering in tissues that can be used in the design of optical coherence tomography systems and can also be used as a tool for the development of new signal processing techniques to enhance the imaging depth of optical coherence tomography systems. A new three-dimensional display technology based on multi-photon absorption in nanocrystal quantum dots will also be presented.
Dr. Ivan T. Lima, Jr., received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering (Electronics) from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Salvador, Brazil, in 1995, the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering (Electronics and Communications) from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Campinas, Brazil, in 1998, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (Photonics) from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA, in 2003. From 1998 to 2003, he was a Research Assistant in the Optical Fiber Photonics Laboratory at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In 2003, Dr. Lima became a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Fargo, ND, USA, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with tenure. From October 2008 to July 2009, he was also a Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada.
Dr. Lima is a senior member of the IEEE Photonics Society since July 2009. In 2006, Dr. Lima was a Faculty Fellow in the 2006 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program in the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, USA. Dr. Lima received the 2003 IEEE LEOS (Photonics Society) Graduate Student Fellowship Award and he was co-recipient of the Venice Summer School on Polarization Mode Dispersion Award in 2003. From 2004 to 2010, he served as co-instructor (invited) of the Short Course SC210: Hands-on polarization measurement workshop that was offered annually at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exposition (OFC).
Dr. Lima's research interests include optical fiber communications and biomedical optics. He has authored and coauthored 37 archival journal papers, 63 conference papers and presentations, 2 book chapter, one U.S. patent, and one provisional U.S. patent. His publications received 815 citations (Google Scholars).
