On the average, the Department of Music will issue between 20-30 scholarship offers each year. These scholarships are in addition to other offers that a student might qualify for. See http://und.edu/admissions/financial-aid/ for more information on additional academic scholarships.
How large are the scholarships?Scholarships differ each year depending on the availability of funds, but the scholarships generally range between $500 and $1500 per year.
Can I receive a scholarship without being a music major? There are a limited number of scholarships each year for some ensemble participants who are not music majors.
I cannot attend the open scholarship audition days. May I send a recorded audition?Absolutely. Check out the requirements for your audition on our website and send us your recording. Scholarship deliberations begin in February, so send in your materials early. While not required, it is very helpful to enclose a music résumé and/or letters of recommendation from music teachers with your recording.
How many students major in music at UND?Our undergraduate programs range between 120 and 150 music students.
What courses should I take to begin a music major? You will be invited to attend our UND Freshman Getting Started in June or July. We will have an advisor there to meet you and ensure you are registered for the correct course for your degree plan. You can also check out our degree plans and course loads on our website at http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/registrar/catalogs/catalog/ugdept/depts/musc.htm
How do I declare a music major? You will declare your major at your Getting Started session the summer before your Freshman year. In addition you can contact our office at anytime for major changes.
How does a student go about joining an ensemble? Each of our ensembles has different audition options. See http://arts-sciences.und.edu/music/ensembles.cfm
May I participate in more than one ensemble? You may be in as many ensembles as your schedule allows.
May I take individual lessons and receive academic credit?Music Majors will take private lessons on their major instrument and in some instances, on their secondary instrument as well.
Are there practice rooms available? We have practice rooms available on both floors of the Hughes Fine Arts Center for your use. The building and practice rooms are open until 11:00pm when classes are in session.
If I have a rock band, may we rehearse at Hughes Fine Arts Center?Check with our office for space availability.
Can I take classes to learn to play guitar? We have class lessons for guitar. Register for MUSC 150 in the fall semester, then continue with MUSC 151 in the spring.
What is the faculty to student ratio in the Music Department? Our fulltime Faculty to Undergraduate student ratio is better than 10 to 1. If you add in our part-time faculty we are less than 5 to 1.
Where can I store my instrument(s)?The department has lockers available for you to check out at any time free of charge.
Am I required to participate in Orientation Day?Yes – all new majors to the UND Department of Music must attend our Orientation day. You will get some important information, audition for the faculty, and take placement tests if you so desire.
How do I audition for lessons? You will be assigned an audition time on Orientation day with either the vocal or instrumental faculty. Each student is given 15 minutes with the faculty so they can get to know you, learn where you are in your musical development and determine what studio or lesson type in which you should enroll.
What do I need to prepare for my entrance audition?See our audition section for information at http://arts-sciences.und.edu/music/applied-placement-auditions.cfm
I am an accomplished pianist. Do I need to take the Keyboard Skills classes? You have the opportunity to test out of all four levels of keyboard skills on Orientation Day. For more information see http://arts-sciences.und.edu/music/keyboard-proficiency.cfm
I am a transfer student. Will my classes count for UND’s music majors? You will be required to audition for lesson placement and take placement tests for Music Theory, Aural Skills and Keyboard Skills.
