Opera at UND
April of 2013 marks the launch of the new UND Opera Theater program with our Inaugural Opera Gala. This new annual event is one of several opportunities for students to get involved in solo vocal performance through the Department of Music. The opportunities include:
Intro to Opera & Stagecraft (Fall Semester):
This is a course geared towards singers in their first or second year as a voice major. The stagecraft component will include acting and movement techniques from Sanford Meisner, Anne Bogart, Tina Landau, H. Wesley Balk, and others. There will also be an introduction to some composers and styles in opera.
Opera Production (Spring Semester):
This course will consist of preparation for the annual opera production, starting in April of 2014. This will be a fully staged opera, with auditions open to all who wish to participate.
Opera Gala (May):
The annual Opera Gala is put on by the UND Chamber Orchestra and UND Opera programs. This gives students the opportunity to sing alongside faculty with a full orchestra.
Opera Club (Year long):
This group gives students an opportunity to view productions of operas on the big screen. Whether on campus or travelling to see one of the Metropolitan Opera HD broadcasts, students are able to learn a bit about the opera before they watch it, with a brief discussion afterwards.
