The University of North Dakota Music Department is pleased to present programs to involve the Greater Grand Forks community in musical endeavors. Music & Me is a ten-week program for children birth-five years old and their families/caregivers to celebrate the importance of music in children's lives. Vocal music lessons for third graders to adult ages are also available.
MUSIC & ME is a ten-week (once weekly for 30 minutes) class for children aged birth to five years old and their caregivers led by Jessica Knight. Each class includes chants, fingerplay, lap songs, dance and movement, and instrument playalongs, with the end goal of understanding the importance of music and movement for young children.
NOTE: The Monday 5:45 class is full. Please consider registering for the Monday 6:30PM or Saturday 10AM classes as soon as possible to guarantee a spot. Registration including a check made to UND confirms your spot.
Classes are Monday nights at 5:45 and 6:30, and Saturdays at 10AM. Each class will take place in room 258 of Hughes Fine Arts Center on the UND Campus. See the registration form for details on pricing.

*Note: In case of class cancellations, announcements and make-up dates will be posted on this website.Paul Mortenson teaches weekly 30-minute individual voice lessons to ages third grade and up. An Honors Recital may be held at the end of the spring semester for students who wish to perform. Registration is subject to instructor availability.
Dr. Lewis, the director of the Community Music program, is an Associate Professor of Music Education at UND and is a nationally published author and recognized music educator.
Jessica Knight
Jessica has been a K-12 music educator in Wisconsin and is a graduate student at UND in early childhood education. She has enjoyed participating in early childhood music classes as a mother of three children and as a trained teacher. She is also active as a member of the Grand Forks Master Chorale Board of Directors.
Her philosophy of music education for young children centers around participation and enjoyment in music as a family, including singing, moving, and playing instruments.

Paul Mortenson, MM, MA
Paul has sung in voice seminars with Oren Brown, formerly of Juilliard, and with Elizabeth Mannion, at the Vocal Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara. He has toured professionally with the Norman Luboff Choir (out of New York City) and has three world premieres to his credit. A veteran of numerous regional solo, stage, and choral performances in Florida and the upper Midwest, he has also been active as a clinician for voice and music education workshops throughout the area and as an adjudicator for ND/MN secondary vocal contests. Since 1984 he has been a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and has taught music at all levels from kindergarten through undergraduate and adult. His specialties include vocal registration; vocal health; music performance anxiety; preparation of individuals for contests, auditions and stage roles; and acting training for singers.
