Integrated Studies in Norway
For several years, the Integrated Studies Program has been privileged to partner with the University's study abroad program at the American College of Norway (ACN). Each spring an ISP faculty member teaches Integrated Studies-style courses at ACN.
The American College is, essentially, a branch campus of UND, located 45 minutes south of Oslo in the small coastal city of Moss. All courses taught at ACN are taught in English and are UND courses, often Essential Studies classes, and the tuition is the same for these courses as it is for courses taught on UND's main campus. Since the courses are UND courses, there are no transfer issues which many students encounter when they study abroad at other international universities. And, although study abroad is usually not available to students until their sophomore year, ACN is an exception to the rule: first year students are allowed to study abroad at ACN.
Students who take advantage of the opportunity to study at ACN meet students from around the world. Though many students there are from Norway, many are also from Africa, Asia, and other portions of Scandinavia. Many of the international students who attend ACN come to the U.S. and continue their studies at the University of North Dakota, so the international friendships students form can continue throughout their college experience.
In addition, Moss is centrally located to many international airports, so students can easily expand their international experience by traveling throughout Europe and Eastern Europe.
Advantages of studying at ACN
The faculty of Integrated Studies encourage every UND student to study abroad no matter where they go, but we think that studying at the American College of Norway is a very unique and beneficial opportunity and we actively promote it for the following reasons:
* It allows for a more cost-effective and safe way to study abroad.
* ACN provides a very encouraging and nurturing environment for learning.
* Since ACN is essentially a branch campus of UND, all courses are UND courses and appear as such on student transcripts.
* Students pay UND's low tuition rates, so this is one of the most cost effective ways to study abroad.
* Classes are taught in English by UND professors.
* Students meet, take courses, and often live with students from around the world.
* Students form deep friendships with international students who often transfer to UND, so those friendships and connections continue.
* International travel is affordable and easy from ACN's home city of Moss, Norway.
* Students of Scandinavian descent have the opportunity to re-connect with their heritage.
