Oil Boom Survey
Dr. Gregory Vandeberg
Education:
Ph.D., Kansas State University, 2005
Research Interests:
My current research is focused on the transport and deposition of heavy metals in river systems, nutrient loading to surface water, and the spatial modeling of these phenomena using geographic information systems (GIS). I am leading a water and sediment quality study of Lake Alice National Wildlife Refuge, ND investigating nutrient and trace element sources. My Ph.D. research with Chuck Martin at Kansas State University characterized and modeled the distribution of heavy metals and arsenic in floodplain deposits of the Blackfoot River, Montana. Previous research has focused on the characterization and reclamation of metal and coal mining areas and included many laboratory, greenhouse and field studies to ameliorate plant limiting conditions such as acidity, phytotoxicity and fertility. I also used remote sensing to identify lead and zinc mining wastes in the Tri-State Mining District of Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. My M.S. research at Montana State University with William W. Locke investigated the interaction between Late Pleistocene valley glaciers and piedmont glaciers in the northern Yellowstone region. My graduate students have addressed several research areas: a water quality study of a prairie wetland system; using LiDAR to identify archaeological sites on Isle Royale National Park; investigating user preferences of the Maah Daah Hey trail in the badlands of western North Dakota; and bald eagle nesting site preferences in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota. Further information on my research can be found in the attached CV and my personnel web site.
