Graduate Program Requirements
All applicants must meet the admission requirements of the UND Graduate School.
Admission to "Approved" status for graduate work in Geography requires a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 point scale) in all undergraduate work and a minimum of 18 semester credits of undergraduate work in geography, including at least one course in each of these fields: physical, human, regional, and techniques, plus six credits in fields cognate to geography. Outstanding candidates with limited backgrounds in geography may be accepted on a qualified basis, but their deficiencies must be remedied early in the graduate program. Complete details can be found in the UND Graduate School Catalog.
Master of Arts and Master of Science
Those seeking M.A. and M.S. degrees must complete three required courses, GEOG 501 - Geographic Thought through Time, GEOG 541: Seminar in Geography, and GEOG 578 - Geographic Research and Writing. Students must complete either a thesis or independent study, plus a minor or cognate area of study that reflects their focus on physical or human topics.
Thesis programs for the M.A. and M.S. require at least 30 semester credits including nine credits in approved minor or cognate courses. These programs emphasize research and prepare students for doctoral degree studies or traditional job markets.
Non-thesis M.A. and M.S. programs require at least 36 semester credits, including nine credits in approved minor or cognate courses. These programs emphasize development of geographic skills that can be applied to specific problems and projects which may or may not involve research.
