In the Air Pollution workshop "Chemistry against Dust", we typically have between 120-180 participants.The day consists of the series of presentations, hands-on demonstrations and a tour. The detailed information can be found in our PROGRAM .
The presentations are given by a faculty involved in atmospheric research in the Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Atmospheric Sciences, and Political Sciences Departments. Each presentation is 15-min long and introduces students to various concepts relevant to atmospheric research. The concepts presented touch on a role of particles in air pollution and climate changes, Air pollution and energy challenges, Modelling and Predictions of Air Pollution, and Aircraft and field sampling.
During the presentation period we have also some fun breaks where had demonstrations discussing absorption of carbon dioxide in the ocean and its eventual saturation leading to increased concentrations of CO2 in the air. We have observed the color change in presence of indicators as the water was acidified by dry ice (solid CO2).
In another break, we perform a little science experiment with balloons filled with several gases with an aim to hypothesize and test which gas is in which balloon. Finalizing with a great explosion of the hydrogen-filled balloon (Safety PRECAUTION, never fill the balloon with pure hydrogen, we use ~50/50 helium/hydrogen mixture).
We have several hands-on demonstrations, where students actively participate and learned some science principles. We have done famous experiment generating a cloud in the bottle, learning about the relationship between atmospheric pressure and formation of clouds.
Students were then able to relate this experiment to a real research instrument, the Cloud Condensation Nuclei Counter that counts the number of particles in the air that cloud droplets form onto under supersaturated environments similar to what is experienced in real atmospheric clouds.
Another hands-on demonstration involved a chromatography of colors, where we have observed how marker color travel up the construction paper when using alcohol. We talked about interactions causing different colors to behave in different ways. A follow on demonstration in chromatography has been used to learn about gas chromatography of wood smoke and being able to identify one of the typical components of the wood smoke in a chromatogram.
Finally, we have played in the computer lab where students visited websites to learn about the current status of the air pollution. They also were able to play some GAMES .
During last two years, we went to see UND's Cessna Citation Research Aircraft. This airplane is used on various atmospheric research projects such as the NASA led GPM Cold Season Experiment (GCPEX) to understand how snow amounts can be better measured using satellite sensors.
